Frequently Asked Questions

Can hypnotherapy help with anxiety, stress and overthinking?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy aims to help you manage stress, improve sleep patterns, quieten overthinking and develop a calmer, more confident mindset. We work together to explore what is happening now, build on your strengths and find new ways to respond to everyday challenges.
Everyone is different, and understanding your individual circumstances is an important part of finding the right way forward.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, and how does it work?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines talking therapy, positive psychology, education about how the brain works (neuroeducation) and hypnosis. We explore your preferred future, build on your strengths and focus on practical steps towards positive change.
Hypnosis is a state of relaxed, focused attention. You remain in control throughout, and sessions are tailored to your individual needs and goals.
The approach encourages you to focus on possibilities rather than dwelling on problems. Your commitment to the process, including listening to your relaxation recording between sessions, is an important part of the work we do together.
The brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and form new connections, known as neuroplasticity. With focus and practice, new ways of thinking and responding can develop over time. Research into neuroplasticity has explored changes over periods as short as eight weeks, although the timescale and experience will vary from person to person.

What happens in my first session?

Your first appointment is called an Initial Consultation and costs £80. It’s an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what you would like to change and what you hope to achieve.
We’ll gather some information, explore why you may be feeling as you do, and discuss how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help. I’ll explain how the brain works in relation to your experiences and answer any questions you have.
There is no hypnosis during this first consultation. After I’ll provide you with a relaxation recording to listen to between sessions, helping you become familiar with the process.
You don’t need to arrive with everything figured out. We’ll work together to identify a useful starting point and agree on the next steps. There’s no pressure to continue if you decide the approach isn’t right for you.

Will I remember what happens during hypnosis?

Yes, most people remain aware of what is happening during hypnosis and remember their session. Some people drift in and out of a deep state, which this is common in the first few sessions and with clients struggling to sleep, this soon passes as clients perfect the art of self-hypnosis.
You remain in control throughout. You can speak, move or stop at any time.
Many of my clients find the relaxation part of the session increasingly enjoyable, and some report it is the part they look forward to the most.

How much does hypnotherapy cost?

An Initial Consultation and subsequent Follow-On sessions cost £80 per 50-minute session.
A focused two-hour smoking or vaping cessation session costs £260, with no separate Initial Consultation required.
The number of sessions and overall cost will depend on your individual goals and circumstances. We can explore the options before you decide how you’d like to proceed.
Session packages are also available to help make a course of therapy more affordable. We can talk through these during your free discovery call. Committing to a course from the outset gives positive changes time to take hold and helps you build on your progress.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your goals, circumstances and the nature of the difficulty you want to address.
As a guide, a specific phobia or a performance-related goal involves a course of around four sessions, while general anxiety may involve a course of around eight. A focused smoking or vaping session lasts two hours. More complex or longstanding difficulties may require a different approach or a longer period of support.
These are guides based on my experience, rather than fixed timescales. Everyone’s needs, personalities and goals are different.
A free 15-minute discovery call is a good place to start. We can discuss what you’re looking for and whether my approach may be suitable. Your Initial Consultation gives us an opportunity to explore your circumstances in more detail.
We’ll review how things are progressing, and I’ll always aim to be honest about what I believe I can offer and when additional or different support may be appropriate.

Can hypnotherapy help in just one session?

Some people notice a positive change after their first few sessions, particularly when they have a specific goal in mind, such as building confidence for an exam or improving their approach to sports performance.
My aim is not simply to help you work towards a short-term change, but to help you develop practical ways of thinking and responding that you can use in everyday life.
The brain can adapt through learning and practice. This ability, known as neuroplasticity, is one reason we focus on developing and reinforcing helpful ways of thinking and responding over time. For some people, meaningful changes can begin to develop over a period of around eight weeks.
I’m always happy to discuss your goals beforehand, review your progress as we work together and consider what further support, if any, may be useful.

Can you help my child if they are anxious about going to school?

Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) can be distressing for both children and parents. If your child is struggling to attend school because of anxiety or emotional distress, you may be feeling worried, frustrated or unsure where to turn for help.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can support children in building confidence, managing anxious feelings and developing ways of coping with everyday challenges. Understanding what your child is experiencing is an important starting point, while keeping our focus on positive steps forward.
I generally work with children from around eight years old, depending on their maturity, understanding and individual needs. We’ll always have an initial conversation with a parent or guardian to discuss the situation and whether this approach is appropriate. Sessions are adapted to each child; for example, many children enjoy working on puzzles during the hypnosis part.
School attendance difficulties can have many contributing factors. Hypnotherapy may form part of a wider support plan alongside parents, school and other professionals where appropriate. I understand that accessing support can sometimes be difficult, and we can discuss what may be helpful for your child.

Can hypnotherapy help me stop vaping or smoking?

If you want to stop vaping or smoking, we can explore how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy may support you in changing the habit.
My focused two-hour session is designed to draw on and amplify your motivation, commitment and determination to stop. We explore the habits and triggers associated with smoking or vaping and work towards strengthening your resolve to make the change you want.
The session costs £260. Your own motivation and commitment are important parts of the process, and we’ll discuss your goals and what support may be appropriate for you.

Can hypnotherapy help improve my sports performance?

Yes, hypnotherapy can be used to explore the mental side of sport and performance. You might want to improve your focus, confidence and consistency, manage nerves or feel more composed under pressure.
Perhaps you’re experiencing a specific difficulty, such as the yips, or there’s just one small part of your game or activity you’d like to improve. We can focus on the particular change you want to make.
Every athlete and situation is different. The aim is to help you develop a more helpful mindset to support your performance.

Is there an age limit on receiving hypnotherapy?

I generally work with children from around eight years old, although suitability depends on their maturity, understanding and individual needs.
An initial conversation with a parent or guardian helps us consider whether the approach is appropriate. We can also discuss how sessions might be adapted to suit your child.
There is no upper limit, but as in all clients, cognitive ability will be reviewed and kind, honest advice on how successful treatment is likely to be, will be given.

How regular are sessions?

Sessions are usually scheduled one to two weeks apart. Regular sessions can help maintain continuity and allow you to practise what we discuss between appointments.
I understand that work, family and other commitments can make this difficult, so we can discuss a schedule that works for you.
Some clients choose to book occasional refresher sessions after completing a course, depending on their needs.

Can I have hypnotherapy online, or do I need to attend in person?

Sessions are available online or in person where appropriate. We can discuss which option is most suitable for you when you get in touch.
Some clients choose a mixture of online and in-person sessions to help maintain regular appointments.
The important thing is finding an arrangement in which you feel comfortable and can engage with the sessions.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?

No single approach is right for everyone. A good fit matters, and being open to the process, wanting to make changes and developing a positive working relationship with your therapist can all help.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be used to explore a range of unwanted behaviours, reactions, feelings and habits. If you contact me, we can discuss what you’re looking for support with and whether this approach seems appropriate for your circumstances.
Hypnotherapy can work alongside other medical or therapeutic support, but it should not replace medical advice or necessary treatment. Where additional or different support may be appropriate, we can discuss the next steps.
